Wheat Bulb Fly

To date, 20 fields have been sampled in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire to establish baseline levels of Wheat Bulb fly eggs. From this data we can see that 50% of fields sampled are at high or very high risk of attack from Wheat Bulb fly in the new year. This makes 2005 the highest risk season for several years, and we anticipate severe crop damage in typical Bulb fly hotspots, especially in late sown crops. A further 9 fields have been sampled in east Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, but data will not be available before January.

Action: Use Risk Assessment Charts to identify fields at high risk. These are late drilled, e.g. following sugar beet, or backward crops with few tillers and poor overall establishment. Be prepared to apply Dursban WG at 1.0 kg/ha in 200 to 1,000 litres per hectare of water to fields in the highest risk category. With the cold temperatures already experienced this winter it is likely that some egg hatch will occur very early in the new year. If necessary, Dursban WG can be applied to frosty ground but should NOT be tank mixed.

Always read the label. Use pesticides safely.

Farm Vision Winter Seminar - Post MTR The Way Forward,
1st February 2005

You are invited to attend a seminar for Farm Vision clients held in conjunction with Bidwells at their Trumpington office. This seminar will look closely at the new measures introduced following MTR and how they impact on your farm business. It will be a very practical day exploring opportunities to maintain business viability. More details will follow in the early New Year, but an early indication of your intention to attend would be appreciated.

Grass-weed control in cereals

In most cases excellent grass-weed control has been achieved where pre-emergence applications have been made. Best results have been from flufenacet/pendimethalin products with flufenacet/DFF giving slightly lower levels of control. Early post-emergence treatments have not given such high levels of control, but have still been worthwhile in most cases, as a start to the programme. In many cases it has been possible to delay the follow-up treatment; product choice depending on weed spectrum and following crop. If the second application has not been made fields must be inspected in the early New Year and decision on product and timing made.

Entry Level Scheme

The first of the environmental schemes will be launched in the early New Year. It is vital that you take the first opportunity to apply for the Entry Level Scheme, which is likely to be in March 2005. Farm Vision has experience of drawing up schemes following involvement in the Deeping Pilot area and is offering this service to clients. Please contact as soon as possible to arrange a meeting to get the ball rolling.

Oilseed rape - Phoma

High levels of Phoma leaf spot have been experienced this autumn. Most crops have been treated in the autumn and some badly affected ones have had a follow-up treatment. If not they will need inspecting in the New Year to evaluate levels of new leaf spotting.
